Programme Outcomes

On completion of B.Sc. Botany program students will be specifically able to

  1. Prepare and view specimens for examination using light microscopy
  2. Identify and classify the plants on the basis of morphological characters.
  3. Students learn to carry out practical work, in the field and in the laboratory, with minimal risk
  4. Gain knowledge to assess plant diversity, its importance for society, health, safety, legal and environmental issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to the biodiversity conservation
  5. Understand the impact of the plant diversity in societal and environmental issues, and demonstrate the knowledge and need for sustainable development.
  6. Students will be able to identify the major groups of organisms with an emphasis on plants and be able to classify them within a phylogenetic framework
  7. Students will be able to compare and contrast the characteristics of plants, algae, and fungi that differentiate them from each other and from other forms of life.
  8. Students will be able to explain how Plants function at the level of the gene, genome, cell, tissue, Flower development
  9. Students will be able to give specific examples of the physiological adaptations, development, reproduction and mode of life cycle followed by different forms of plants.
  10. Students will be able to use plant tissue culture techniques and instrumentation related to it.
  11. Students will also acquire fundamental knowledge in Plant Science and also understand that Botany is an integral part of the human life and developments.
  12. Skill Enhancement Courses offered during third year of this program are being designed with the aim of imparting specific skills to the students which will lead to the self employment through development of their own enterprises.
  13. At the end of the curriculum, the student should have increased: an aptitude towards science and nature and also undertakes the fundamental and applied research in plant science in the benefit of the human and nature.
  14. This program will help the students for their career development.
  15. This program will provide updated curriculum with recent advances in the subject and enable the students to face NET, SET, UPSC and other competitive examinations successfully.

SEMESTER-I SBOTCT 1101: VIRUSES, BACTERIA AND ALGAE

Theory Paper- I

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  1. To understand the morphology, structure, and evolution of various organisms like Viruses, Bacteria and Algae. 
  2. To differentiate between various groups of Viruses, Bacteria and Algae. 
  3. Learn the importance of Viruses, Bacteria and Algae for human beings.

SEMESTER-II : SBOTCT 1151: FUNGI, LICHENS AND MYCORRHIZA

Theory Paper- II

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  1. To understand the morphology, structure, and interdependence of various organisms like Fungi, Lichens and Mycorrhiza. 
  1. To differentiate between various groups of Fungi, Lichens and Mycoplasma. 
  2. To Learn the importance of Fungi, Lichens and Mycoplasma for human beings.

SEMESTER-III

Theory Paper- VI: PlantAnatomy

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  1. To gain knowledge of plant cells, tissues and their functions.
  2. To know about plants anatomical structure, their developmental patterns.
  3. To identify and compare structural differences among different taxa of vascular plants.
  4. To make connections between plant anatomy and the other major disciplines of biology
  5. Students will acquire knowledge of anatomy of root, stem and leaf in dicot and monocot plants.
  6. Vascular tissues and its constituents by sections and maceration, wood anatomy, TS, TLS and RLS
  7. Mechanical tissues (Collenchyma, Sclerenchyma, Stone cells and Xylem), Secretary Tissues (Mucilage Canals, Resin canals, Nectaries, and oil glands), laticifers (Latex cells and Vessels).
  8. Normal and abnormal secondary growth etc.
  9. Understand the normal and anomalous secondary growth in plants and their causes.
  10. Perform the techniques in anatomy.
  11. Understand the scope & importance of Anatomy.

 

Theory Paper- VII: Plant Physiology and Biochemistry

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  1. make students realize how plants function
  2. Understand the Biochemical nature of cell.
  3. Know the chemical nature of biomolecules
  4. Understand the different types of interaction in Biomolecules.
  5. Know importance and scope of plant physiology. 
  6. Students will learn the flowering physiology, vernalization and seed dormancy in plants.
  7. To know the role of different plant growth regulators in plant physiology.
  8. Learn about the movement of sap and absorption of water in plant body.
  9. Understand the plant movements.

SEMESTER-IV

Theory Paper- VIII: Plant Embryology

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  1. Know Plant reproductive parts development of male, female gametophytes and fruits.
  2. Know the structure and development of monocot and dicot embryos.
  3. Compare the function and morphology of pollen grains.
  4. Describe and illustrate modern and fossil spores and pollen grains.
  5. Demonstrate foundational knowledge in embryology of plants.
  6. Know the methods of pollination and fertilization.
  7. Know fertilization, endosperm and embryogeny.

 

Theory Paper- IX: Plant Metabolism and Biotechnology

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to

  1. To study of different pathways in Photosynthesis , respiration , nitrogen metabolism
  2. To know Structure and general features of enzymes.
  3. Concept of enzyme activity and enzyme inhibition.
  4. To gain the knowledge of basic aspects and applications of plant tissue culture
  5. Students shall be become familiar with the gene cloning and its transfer in plants

SBOTE502 FUNDAMENTALS OF PLANT PATHOLOGY

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to 

  • Understand the importance of plant pathology and will helps to develop interest in Plant Pathology.
  • Bring the awareness among the farmers for losses caused due to epidemics.
  • Adapt plant pathology as a profession to learn research and diagnostic skills.
  • Know importance of sign and symptoms for detection of pathogens and disease, integrated methods of disease management, use of biological and chemicals in disease management.

SBOTE 552: PHYSIOLOGICAL PLANT PATHOLOGY AND PLANT DISEASES

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to 

  • Realize about physiological and molecular changes brought about in host plants
  • Student will think how to prevent the production of enzymes and toxins of plant pathogens.
  • Students will know common plant pathogens, symptoms, etiology, disease cycle and management of major diseases of crop plants.
  • Students will know the concept post harvest diseases of fruit & their management.
